A seasoned veteran who recently joined the team introduced the concept of Brown Bag sessions. These are mini informal trainings that the SEs give to to the team to help round out everyones skill sets. With everyone coming from a variety of backgrounds this allows for knowledge centralizing and up leveling across the board. From my perspective, I love seeing the SEs take ownership and have a platform where they can share knowledge and build their personal brand. Some example trainings have included
- Early SE career advice
- 3 pillars of outstanding SEs
- SE tools setup on AWS
- How to write clean code
- Story telling frameworks
As you can tell these topics are not specific to the company logo that’s on your t-shirt. It’s about upleveling everywhere, giving friendly reminders, and sharing best practices you’ve picked up along the SE journey. We do these on a bi-weekly basis and it’s one of my favorite meetings I get to attend.
